IS THIS TRAINING FOR YOU?

You’ve completed a teacher training but feel like yoga philosophy was brushed over and you only ‘sort of understand it'.

You want to develop a personal yoga practice grounded in an understanding of yoga’s philosophical underpinnings.

You want to move away from the Western understanding of yoga as a fitness modality.

You’re drawn to taking a yoga teacher training to deepen your knowledge of yoga but don’t necessarily wish to teach.

You’ve completed a teacher training but don’t feel that it sufficiently supported your development as a student of yoga, especially yoga philosophy.

You’re ready to have your yoga practice go way beyond just surface exercise.
Your wish to deepen your knowledge of yoga philosophy beyond the Eight Limbs and would like to have a working and deep understanding of The Bhagavad Gītā and the Yoga Sūtras of Patańjali so that you can use the teachings on your mat, in your life, and be able to explain them to others when you're teaching.

You teach yoga but feel you are losing connection with your practice as a space for self-knowledge and care in favor of treating it as a space to plan your classes.

You’ve taught or practiced yoga for a long time but your practice has fallen away and you’re inspired to reinvigorate and deepen it.

You’d like to become part of a supportive community of practitioners engaged in studying yoga at more depth than you currently have access to in your local studio.

WHAT IS YOGA STUDENT TRAINING?

You are drawn to yoga because you sense it can help you, though you may not know how or why.

You want to really know what yoga is and how to practice in ways that are applicable to your real life

Deeply understanding yoga philosophy doesn't come easy to most of us.

Yoga philosophy is usually just skimmed over in teacher trainings. Practitioners will put down books like The Bhagavad Gītā and the Yoga Sūtras of Patańjali because they’re so hard to get through.

You want to be a wise student.

You want to really understand the teachings deeply

You’re ready to finally & truly live the practice of yoga off the mat.

But ancient yoga philosophy and our modern yoga practice is often hard to navigate and deeply integrate. All too often, the student’s role is misunderstood, reduced in relevance, or rushed through in favor of becoming a teacher.

When you want to understand more about yoga, a teacher training where yoga philosophy is barely taught is usually the only option.

In rushing to declare ourselves experts and teachers, we can lose sight of our own practices and growth. The yoga tradition places great importance upon the relationship between the teacher and student: a student needs a teacher, but a teacher also needs a student.
This course aims to reframe what it is to be a yoga student and satisfy your thirst for knowledge in ways that are respectful of yoga’s traditions yet acknowledge the realities of our modern lives. While many other trainings place much of the focus on physicality and aesthetics, Yoga Student Training offers a clear and comprehensive course of the true teachings of yoga.

During this year-long journey, you’ll tap into your inner wisdom and take a deep-dive into yoga philosophy with passion and a dash of humor. The interactive lectures that can be watched live or via the recordings (SCROLL DOWN FOR LIVE DATES & TIMES) will simplify complex concepts, and the no-pressure structure will give you time to integrate and engage with the principles in everyday life...

So you can really understand them.

So you can teach them with confidence.

So you can live them in your daily life.

WHETHER YOU'RE A YOGA STUDENT OR A TEACHER, YOU MAY BE ASKING?

How can I be a wise student of yoga? What is my role as a student?

Do students have responsibilities?

What is the nature of the student/teacher relationship, and how is this relevant to yoga?

What is the practical point of the yoga practice techniques offered?

How can I learn yoga philosophy in a clear, straightforward way that applies to what I do on the mat as well as within my daily life?

What is the relationship between what I do on a yoga mat and how I live my life?

Why do studios, classes, and systems follow so many different techniques?

How can I participate as a wise and active student if the methods are different?

How do I decide which techniques, styles, etc. are right for me?

Yoga Student Training will provide an environment in which you can engage with these and many other pertinent questions. We’ll unpack these important issues and discuss how the current framework exists in part because they are not prioritized.
By the end of the course, you will have a deep, layered, and very personal understanding of what it means to be a yoga student that benefits you as an individual and as part of the broader yoga community. Participants with longstanding practices or teaching experience will learn the skills and engage with the process of what it means to be a student again and be able to sustain this in the longer term.

This training is designed to:
  • Enrich the experiences you have on a yoga mat
  • Give you a clearer understanding of how yoga and its teachings can become a fundamental aspect of how you navigate the world
When you’re finished with this program, you’ll have confidence in yourself and your ability to learn (and, for some, to teach) and a deeper understanding of yoga and the yoga world—and, most importantly, yourself.

COURSE SYLLABUS

SESSION ONE - WATCH IMMEDIATELY UPON ENROLLING

What is Yoga, Yoga's History & Course Logistics + What does it mean to be a student? What is a practice? How do we practice?

The course begins with a lecture on the history of yoga's concepts and practice techniques. We will discuss the key concepts of yoga, how they have shifted over time, and consider the factors that have caused us to arrive at this juncture in the history and development of yoga.

We will look at what it really means to be a yoga student and explore the skills w need to become (or continue to be) a wise student who actively participates in the educational processes embedded within yoga.

We’ll discuss the intentions of a yoga practice within a historical and modern context, learn how the current framework actively impedes that, and situate ourselves as individual practitioners and teachers. We’ll consider the various practice techniques that we might employ to move us toward yoga’s deeper aims.

We’ll outline the logistics of the course and talk about to how to get the best out of YST by clarifying what you need and how best to engage.

SESSION TWO - WATCH IMMEDIATELY UPON ENROLLING

The Yoga Sūtras Outlined

The Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali has become the classical yoga text most commonly utilized in Western yoga teacher trainings. We will start by investigating the historical use of the text as well as the intentions behind its teachings, followed by an engaging and interactive philosophy lecture and group discussion.

Based on the understanding we gain, we will spend the afternoon breaking down current class structures, such as sequencing and cueing, to look for opportunities to stay connected to the Sūtras’ philosophy within the context of physical practice and to share that understanding with your students. You will be offered activities and interactive classroom techniques to actively engage with the fundamental and concepts yourself, as well as tools that help you to learn how to develop techniques and educational tools of your own for your classes and students if you teach.

SESSION THREE - DECEMBER 3 - 1-4PM EST

The Bhagavad Gītā Outlined

Although older and potentially of more practical help to modern yoga practitioners than the Yoga Sūtras, the Bhagavad Gita is less often encountered. We will begin by historically contextualizing the use of and the intentions behind the teachings in this rich and beautiful text, followed by a philosophy lecture and group discussion about its concepts.

Based on the understanding we gain, we will spend the afternoon breaking down current class structures, such as sequencing and cueing, to look for opportunities to stay connected to the Gita’s philosophical themes within the context of physical practice and to share that understanding with your students. You will be offered activities and interactive classroom techniques to actively engage with the key concepts yourself, as well as tools that help you to learn how to develop techniques and educational tools of your own for your classes and students if you teach.

SESSION FOUR - DECEMBER 10 - 1-4PM EST

The Physical Aspects of a Practice - Anatomy, Physiology, The Nervous System, Hypermobility, Class Construction & More

Any discussions of the physical aspects of a yoga practice must address factors that make it inaccessible or unsustainable so we can create a wiser, more personally effective approach. We will discuss hypermobility and how its prevalence within the modern yoga landscape impacts the practice and apply this information to the physical component of our ongoing monthly practices and lecture updates.

PHYSICAL ASANA PRACTICE - 2X PER MONTH

Teachers and long-term students worldwide are longing for more personal practice time while in a community setting. Many feel a strong desire to be a student in a public class again and to have the opportunity to learn by doing. The monthly led physical practice sessions are a chance to be inspired. They will help you make your practice your own again, giving you the chance to grow for yourself. Teachers will also better understand how to offer what you learn as an individual in relationship to the yoga tradition’s aims to the students you teach. This will be time in which you step wholeheartedly into the student role. You’ll be presented with innovative and effective methods and techniques to allow you to deepen your direct personal experience with yoga’s philosophy while staying engaged in a physical practice that has all the qualities of classes you love … and maybe some of the qualities that you miss if you teach.

PHILOSOPHY LECTURE - MONTHLY

Lecture on Philosophy

Each month will begin with a lecture on a portion of the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali and the Bhagavad Gītā. We will discuss roughly 15-30 sutras each month and two chapters of the Gītā. By the end the course we will have made it through the entirety of both texts including and additional overview of the entirety of each text the last two months of the course. In essence you will have covered the entirety of each set of teachings three times over giving you a very deep and thorough exploration and understanding of these texts not just in theory but in practice and practical life application.

The month philosophy lectures are not just an academic look at the texts but contain a thorough explorations of the concepts the teachings told through story, metaphor, and relatable real life situational examples which allow you to explore the teachings in a very personal way throughout your day to day life.

No longer will you feel like these teachings are not relatable nor that they're far to confusing to be applicable. You will have a real and tangible relationship with the material that will aid you in. your growth as a student of yoga and will also have a direct impact on how you teach if you're also a teacher of yoga.

DISCUSSION ROUNDTABLE - MONTHLY

Community Discussion and Q&A

Every month we will come together to discuss how the process is unfolding. Between sessions, you will be given points to reflect on and investigate. Within this session, you will have the opportunity to share your experience, ask questions, gain clarification, and hear what other participants are experiencing.

Time and space will be made for contributions from all who wish to participate, but there is no obligation to actively contribute to the discussions. Everyone has their own learning style, and for some, this may be a time to simply reflect and listen.
